PS3 Error: 8001050F (Update)

[p]Update: UK & US consoles are now working as of 1st March 11:30PM GMT, the internal clock ticked over to March 1st 12:00AM and everything is fine.[/p][p]So millions of PS3 users turned on their PS3 today and were greeted with an error code while trying to connect to the PSN (8001050F). From what we can tell, this is only affecting the older (fat) PS3s. It seems to be a problem with the date, the PS3 thinks it's a leap year but it's not so it's going into meltdown.[/p][p]

The going theory is that the PS3 is storing some form of date in GMT, then modifying that to get whatever you see in the on-screen clock. That modification process seems to be fine--the system can take 2/28/2010, 9PM GMT, add four hours, and get 3/1/2010, 1AM random time zone.

What's apparently effed, as speculation goes, is when the internal GMT-tracking rolls over to 3/1. It's either not rolling, or rolling to 2/29, at which point a system tries to add/subtract from 2/29, which it can't do because the front-end calendar doesn't have a 2/29/2010, and poop explodes. Seemed to happen around 4PM PDT, which I think is 12AM GMT, so.

And the PS3 launched in 2006; it's hit 4 2/28s so far. 2007 and 2009 were odd-numbered years; 2008 was an even, and a leap year. 2010 is the first even non-leap-year the system's been around for. If some sort of base-level math is choking on itself, it may have ruled out the odd 2007 and 2009 successfully, but is convinced the even 2010 is a leap year (this part I'm less sure of, but is why leap year could theoretically come into play at some point.)

[/p][p]Is there a fix? Not really, we just need to wait until tomorrow to be able to go on PSN. Though remember, your PS3 may think it's March 1st tomorrow so you'll need to set the clock.[/p]

Is there any solution for this for now? I tried to change the date to different times but the system still gives the same error code.

Great info. That makes sense to me.

So people are losing trophies and trophy lists as a result. I'm guessing because they can't be date/time catalouged properly.

So I would expect a patch today.

I'm curious...what part of the world is PS3 technical support done at? Who addresses this issue? Are they even awake yet and know about it?

They know about it, I doubt they could get an update out that fast even if they tried. I expect they'll just make us wait until tomorrow to get online and they'll probably sneak it into an update later so it never happens again.

And about earning trophies, I wonder if just changing the time/date to 1st March should fix any trophy issues.

thanks for the info. i have been tryin to log in for hours lol.
i searched all over the net looking at other ps3 websites and they all seemed to be having the same problems.
also, i decided to play a lil street fighter and for some reason when i go into "trophy collection" my street fighter trophys have completely dissapeared from the list!. does anyone know why or has had this happen??.
looking forward to putting this all behind us and hopefully it doesnt happen again ay?

Thought our PS3 went ka-put, considering it's louder than a lawnmower...
Time to remove that post, hahah.

PS: Sony is really taking their time with the issue. Do they not care?

i have a phat 80gb ps3 (cechk04) and it worked last night at the same time as my friends 40gb phat ps3 didnt work. is mine safe? can i use it? or should i not turn it on until they fix it?

Exactly the same thing happened with me and Street Fighter. The funny thing is that I had just beat the Time Attack on Hard. I hope they bring something to patch this thing up.

You see, trophies are for bragging rights. Right now Sony (or the glitch to be more precise)
managed to make me less proud.

howd u manage to play a game i couldnt play any i got some shit about trophies not synced

I have a fat ps3 and it hasn't given me any errors at all. I am able to get trophies and sync just fine.

So I've had my PS3 for about a year now and this is the 1st problem ... still better than all the ones I've had with the two 360's I used to own! ... lol!

Tbh, it can't be a problem with the servers or the network. I have been able to successfully access my network account via the Official UK PlayStation Website and iTrophies, and I still have all my trophies on these accounts.

i have a question i did all my heavy rain endings at 1am GMT but no trophy will i get my plat though tomorrow or will i have to do all endings again

what model number is your ps3? i have a cechk04, and it worked last night. i have not turned it on since then. that was 12 hours ago

Also, I tried changing the date but it did not fix my Street Fighter IV trophy list.
I don't have time at the moment to try putting a different game to see if the trophy lists still dissappear.

If anyone has a game that is really really easy, or a game you just started, please try playing it and let everyone know if the trophy list for that game is visible or not.

On the bright side when I log on to my online profile at Sony's site, I can see the SFIV trophy list.

This could mean that once this ordeal is over, the console will update the trophies from Sony's servers, much like getting trophy on a friends console. If that is not possible I will be really pissed off with Sony because it would defeat the purpose of an online profile.

On a silly side I can't help but feel like I am in Heavy Rain right now. I miss a trophy list and I feel like my child is missing....or gone...

i got a text off my mate saying all ps3's are down due to some leap year shit, iv got the same old 80 gb model as him but mines been upgraded to a 500 gb HDD, he says he couldn't get online & couldn't even play a game offline if it had trophy support, thankfully mines not been affected but this type of problem is 1 of a long line of faults with PSN, all i can say is im glad i dont pay for this crappy service
